August is Just Another Word for Busy

An appropriate tagline, don't you think!  August will be a very busy month for us here at the winery.  Concerts, Classes, and Wine Festivals are going to make just about every weekend here a busy one, but we will always have time for you!

Concerts

We are now halfway through our 2008 concert season.  So far the music has been great, the weather agreeable, and most importantly - the wine has been delicious.  If you have missed out on all of the fun and entertainment so far, it is still not too late to join us.  We have TWO exceptionally great returning bands from July, "The WOW Brothers" and the "Skyla Burrell Blues Band," plus TWO bands debuting here at the winery this season.  Be sure to mark the following dates on your calendar. Whether you enjoy country and classic rock, foot stompin' bluegrass or the blues, we guarantee you will have a great afternoon, sipping wine, here at the winery with us.

August 9         Traditions Unleashed

Country & Classic Rock.  "Traditions Unleashed" brings to you the best of classic rock and country music performing a variety of tunes including legendary classic and the marvelous chart busters of today.  A sound so astounding, it will leave you longing to hear more.

August 16       The WOW Brothers

August 23       The Hanover Express Bluegrass Band

What can we say about "The Hanover Express Bluegrass Band"?  Some folks identify their style as foot stompin' or hill music.  The Hanover Express prefers Bluegrass.  They are four individuals traveling the countryside playing and singing traditional bluegrass music with the help of four instruments (guitar, bass, mandolin, and a 5-string banjo).  If you enjoy a blend of history and ballads with that high lonesome sound only Bluegrass music has, then WE ARE THE PLACE TO BE SATURDAY THE 23rd.

August 30   Skyla Burrell Blues Band

Classes!

ATTENTION!  It is not too late to sign up for our Home Wine-Making Class with John the Vintner on Sunday, August 10th  from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. John in his own little quirky way (if you know John, you know what I mean) will take you through the process of making your own wine at home.  John uses either the Heron Bay's Ultra Premium 6 week, 16 liter wine kit or the Heron Bay's 4 week, 8 liter wine kit.  During the class these premium wine kits offer the wine lover a large selection of wines to make and share with friends and family.

The Heron Bay's wine kits have no added sugar and are made from superior quality grape concentrates.  The Ultra Premium (6 week) and Premium (4 week) red and white wine kits allow winemakers to create a fine wine that is rich in body and flavor similar to our own Adams County Winery wines.  Making a wine as delicious as the ones we make here at the winery might prove difficult, but you might be pleasantly surprised with what you create.

If you can not make the August 10th class you will have one more chance this calendar year.  The final Home Wine-Making Class will be held on Saturday, October 18th from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.  These Home Wine-Making Classes do require reservations so call 717.334.4631 or stop by the tasting room and sign up today!  You need to bring only yourself to the class.  ALL winemaking materials used during the class will be available for purchase in the Tasting Room.

Festivals

Well, after a much needed break during the month of July, we find ourselves back in festival mode.  Just about every weekend in August you will be able to find us at a wine festival.  If you have never been to a wine festival you simply must find the time.  Festivals are a great way to spend lazy summer days.  At most festivals, you will find excellent music, outstanding food, and terrific wines.  They are a great way to spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.  I will list the coming festivals, all you have to do is mark them on your calendar and ATTEND.

August 9th       A Walk in the Clouds Beer and Wine Festival

Come touch the sky and enjoy a great time!

Blue Mountain Ski Area hosts BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, wineries and breweries, good food and good times on Saturday, August 9th from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. located in Palmerton, Pennsylvania. This is the first 2008 Walk in the Clouds Wine Festival to be held at Blue Mountain Ski Area and we are excited to be a part of this.  Fun is expensive these days!  Blue Mountain Ski Area has created an affordable festival in your own backyard complete with wine, beer, music, food AND WE WILL BE THERE, "the nation's oldest continuously operating bank barn winery".

August 16th     Benigna's Creek Wine Festival

Summerfest Wine Festival 2008 from 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. in Klingerstown, Pennsylvania.

Our friends over at Benigna's Creek Winery have extended an invitation to us, yet again, to participate in their summerfest wine festival and we just could not resist.  We always have a good time and we are sure you will too.  This is the area's hottest summerfest wine festival AND WE WILL BE THERE, "the nation's oldest continuously operating bank barn winery".

August 23rd and 24th  Seven Springs Wine and Food Festival

So if the Tastes of PA Wine and Music festival is the big brother of Pennsylvania Wine festivals, then Seven Springs must be the little brother.  It is not quite as large or old but full of just as much pomp and circumstance.  This, the 16th annual festival at Seven Springs, is well established and one trip will help you understand why.  This festival runs both Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Circle this date! Attend this festival!  You will not be disappointed AND WE WILL BE THERE, "the nation's oldest continuously operating bank barn winery".

September 6th and 7th  Gettysburg Wine and Music Festival

One of the best wine and music festivals in the entire state is right here in our backyard.  This festival, now in its fourth year continues to grow and grow.  In fact, The Gettysburg Wine & Music Festival has grown so large that they've moved it to a new location.  A location we are sure that you will enjoy even more - GATEWAY GETTYSBURG at the intersection of Route 15 & Route 30.  This fantastic center of entertainment will have a great new larger floor plan, more parking and easy accessibility from all major area highways AND WE WILL BE THERE, "the nation's oldest continuously operating bank barn winery"!  The festival operates from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm both days.  Tickets are $22 at the gate and a designated driver ticket is available for $15.  Tickets can be purchased in advance for $18.  Save money and click HERE to purchase your tickets in advance!

Tasting Room

Celebrate the good life by adding color to your backyard barbecue or your informal gathering of friends with our newest collection of Uptown Acrylic Wine Glasses!  Beautiful, functional, versatile!  Great for today or any time during the fast approaching holidays.  Keep it indoors or take it outdoors, by the pool, campsite, or here at our concerts. Choose from 4 color options: red, green, smoky black, and clear.  Of course, you will need to purchase a set of the newest wine glass charms.  "Suction Cup Wine Charms" are available in gold or silver and come in a set of six so that your new acrylic wine glass doesn't get too far from your fingertips.  We also have neoprene (the stuff of wet suits) Bottle Totes to hold wine, champagne, or whatever comes in a bottle.  We offer these in a wide variety of colors for sale in the Tasting Room.  There are actually some in red to go with your red acrylic wine glass to complete your outdoor table setting.

Bottle jewelry is a charming way to add a special touch to your table or gift of wine.  Each individually designed piece can be used over and over again.  It is the gift that keeps giving.  Browse through the Tasting Room on your next visit and see our newest Bottle Jewelry arrivals of Jeweled Flower, Fleur De Lis, Golden Cluster, Harvest Cluster, Grape Swirl and Sea Dollar.  If you want to add a little extra to your gift add Glass Slippers.  These are embroidered coasters to slip right onto your glass, so you can mingle all you want and never worry about where to set your glass.  You can purchase the Seascape, Seashells or Grapevine designs individually or in a gift box of 4.  Of course, we always have the ever popular Flip Flop wine glass coasters.

Our tasting room is open every day of the week!

There are just too many unique, elegant, traditional, vintage and artfully designed gifts here in our Tasting Room to mention.  Yes, we are open every day of the week so please think of us when you are trying to decide on that special gift.

Vintner's Report

Not much going on this month, campers.  The vines are growing, and the lads are up there right now doing farmy type stuff.  That includes opening up the canopy to the sun and wind.  This will allow better ripening of the fruit, and help control disease.

Evan is in the operations area, and has become the bottling gnome.  We are catching up on bottling last year's wine so we have room for this year's crop.  Some of your favorites are there (Rebel Red and Stray Cat Strut), plus some new ones. More on that later

What wonderful responses we got from you on our request for the one word that best describes our winery!  You guys are great, and we appreciate your response.  We narrowed the choice down to the final six - a very tough decision!  Many of you know that we have a Vintners Club that includes all of you who have purchased one or more cases of wine.  The case discounts grow - 10%, 15%, 15%, 15%, and then 20% off on the fifth and future cases.  Once you're at the 20% level, we place you in our Barrel Tasters Club (BTC).  We have specials, free gifts and other fun with the members of the BTC.  We will submit the final six entries to our BTC for voting and announce the winner in a newsletter in the next month or two.

For you Anglophiles, we had a contest in which we asked you to identify the translation of SWMBO.  One creative person came up with "So, where's my bottle opener"! If you ever viewed the BBC's "Rumpole of the Bailey", you know that Horace Rumpole's wife, "Hilda!", was She Who Must Be Obeyed.  I even gave you the hint of Pomeroy's Wine Bar, Rumpole's favorite watering hole, where he drank "Chateau de Thames Embankment".  Anyway, the first person to correctly answer this was Nicole B. - she won a bottle of wine of her choice.  Congratulations, Nicole!

Our concert series is in full swing.  It is a great time to sit under a tent, have a picnic, sip on some Adams County Winery product, and enjoy the music.  Come on out.  Concerts start at 1300 hours, and go until 1700 hours.  We have great food available for purchase, and Gavin has shown quite a flair for running our booth out in the concert area.  Oh.  Don't forget.  Nobody else's wine or beer is allowed.

This month's contest is as follows; be the first to answer correctly and win a free bottle of wine.  Who was Portia of the Bar?  Send your answer to cathy@adamscountywinery.com not later than Friday, August 15th.
